Tips!?!

Tips!?!

Seems like everywhere you go, there is some sort of tip jar waiting for the unsuspecting customer. Most of us have grown up around tipping at restaurants since the wait staff work for lower wages, and can make up the difference through tips. (Montana has the best of both worlds: the wait staff get at least minimum wage, plus the tips)

Tips were designed to show your appreciation for the service you received. If you received great service, above and beyond the normal, you tipped accordingly. Some people might tip more than the national average of 10 or 15%. (which has changed to 20% now)

What gets frustrating is having the establishment recommend what you should tip. I saw one the other day for 35% (I am not picking on any one industry or establishment, just my perspective)

I was at a hotel last week while driving to Texas and saw a great note in the room thanking us for choosing them. It was such a great touch!!! Then, I saw the envelope.

When has it become customary to tip staff for doing their job. Some hotels even do less for you today because of COVID and staffing issues, but their rates are higher than before. Now, they want us to tip for doing less for us?

Places that I have seen tip recommendations: Coffee houses, hotels, restaurants, even at a couple gas stations.

It does seem like COVID triggered some of this since we all wanted to make sure these businesses survived, but, we need to rein it in. (my opinion only)

I did a CASH Mob during COVID to the restaurants to support the wait staff who were not getting tips since everyone was ordering pickup or delivery. It was needed during that time, but, we need to get back to supporting "above and beyond", not just for being there.

I feel I tip my share, but when it is expected, and the service was just normal, I will probably pass on tipping. More tips happen when it is not required.

With all this being said, please continue to tip as you would, but, just think about the reason for the tip. And always be polite with the staff, no matter what the industry. Everyone is struggling to do their best, so let's treat each other with a "good morning and Thank you". That goes a long way for that person to want to go "above and beyond" for you.

Happy tipping everyone!
